The 5 Best Sad Songs Of 2023 (So Far!) For Those Who Want To Have A Good Cry

5 Best Sad Songs Of 2023

We may only just have entered 2023, but now that New Year’s resolutions have mostly fallen away (ask me if my new treadmill turned into a fancy clothes hanger) and there’s no more shiny ~holiday magic~ to the weather to make it colder and rougher. More fun. Things are, um, not always surprising. And I don’t know about you, but when those sadder feelings come up I personally like to build on that with some songs that go with the energy because nothing says healthy emotional processing like crying along with some sad songs, amirite ?!

Best Sad Songs Of 2023

But do we want to hear old sad music? Of course not! I’m always looking for new music that makes me feel like I can add something to my When You Need a Good Cry playlist. Whether you’re going through a post-holiday breakup, dealing with the fact that breathing seems insanely expensive these days, or suffering from the winter blues, there are plenty of very good reasons to be a little sad (just ask my therapist!) , and luckily 2023 has already brought us some great new sad songs that we can play out loud while you sing along and really feel those sometimes nasty feelings. Already this year we were happy about the new albums by Sam Smith and Lucas Graham, who are known to be good for one or the other emotional, sad song, as well as some others

How To Cry” By Sam Smith

Sam Smith truly writes the best emotional songs for a broken heart, and “How to Cry” from their new album Gloria is another one to add to this list. For those who have been in emotionally abusive relationships, this song will hit the spot with lines like “I thought you could change / But you’re still the same / And I’m still invisible” really poignant.

“Heart Shaped Bruise” By Etta Marcus

The first single from Etta Marcus’ new album Heart-Shaped Bruise is soothing and sad in equal measure, which is exactly what I’m looking for in a sad one-off song. As you may have guessed, this song is about the “heart-shaped bruise” that is left after you had to leave your loved one.

“Never Change” By Lucas Graham

Relationships don’t always end sadly. Sometimes you’re in it and you gradually realize that it’s not what it used to be, but at the same time you don’t want it to end. These mixed feelings are not easy to deal with, and that’s what this song is about.

“All In All”, Khai Dreams

If you haven’t listened to Khai Dreams yet, you should, and “Overall” is the perfect song to immerse yourself in. It has a cold but sad sound, and words like “I’m just in my head, like over and over and over again” that really resonate with everyone whose rethinking can make them feel sad.

Vancouver 2 Mac De Marco

Mac DeMarco’s new album may be entirely instrumental (and based on the various cities he’s been to), but even “Vancouver 2” has a melancholy sound that will let you pick up the sad mood without listening to the lyrics.
