Player Ratings Tottenham-Aston Villa: Hugo Lloris 5, Son 3; Louis 8, Bailey 5

Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League hopes were hit hard after a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday. Antonio Conte’s team could have returned to the top four after winning at Tottenham Hotspur, but second-half goals from Emi Buendia and Douglas Louis kept them in fifth place.

It was a desperately poor performance for Spurs, especially in the second half, as Aston Villa secured two league away games while continuing to improve under new manager Unai Emery. Tottenham striker Harry Kane came closest to scoring a first-half goal that lacked quality when Ashley Young headbutted the England captain.

The first goal came just after the break, when Hugo Lloris, in his first game since losing the World Cup final to France, deflected a shot from Douglas Louis, who then deflected a shot from Ollie Watkins, which Buendía scored with a low kick.

Louis started and finished as No. 2, passing to John McGinn and then reactivating a superb pass from the Villa captain before passing Lloris.

After the final whistle, the Spurs booed and some fans angrily chanted chairman Daniel Levy.

Tottenham lost ground in the rest of the top four after a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

The Spurs were booed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after goals from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz secured a big victory for Unai Emery’s men.

The first goal came from an error by Hugo Lloris, who was unable to hold off a Douglas Luis shot before Watkins intercepted the ball and set up Buendía.

But the second goal was perfect as McGinn gave the Brazilian midfielder a nice ball, who delicately slipped past Lloris from close range.

Antonio Conte thinks the best Spurs can achieve this season is fourth, but he has also hinted that a seventh is a possibility.

In an interview with the BBC, he said: “I want to be honest, I want to be very clear. I told the company, I expressed my opinion. The fans deserve better. Maybe fifth place would be the best. Maybe sixth, seventh, fifth or fourth is the best.”

More from Unai Emery: “They also usually score goals and are a good offensive team.

They feel strong at home, sometimes they play games more openly than usual, and after analyzing them, we realized that we had to play strong in defense and not miss many chances, and we did it.

“They have great attacking players like Harry Kane and Heungmin Son and we knew that if we want to win we have to be strong defensively and go deeper than I normally would.”
