Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 98th birthday, recalling his “indelible contribution” to the country’s development.

Along with President Draupadi Murmu, the Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha spokesman Om Birla and others visited the Vajpayee memorial, Sadaiv Atal to pay their respects with flowers. The Prime Minister also paid tribute to Vajpayee at an event in Parliament.

“Homage to Atal Ji on the Jayanti of him. His contribution to India is indelible. His leadership and vision motivate millions,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Home Minister Amit Shah recalled Vajpayee’s “patriotism, diligence, and dedication”. He tweeted that Vajpayee’s life has been dedicated to “reclaiming the country to its utmost glory”. “…Laying the foundation for a new era of development and good governance under his leadership, Atalji made the world aware of India’s potential and instilled a sense of national pride in the public. Today, on the anniversary of his birth, I pay tribute to him,” Shah said.

Congress General Secretary for Public Affairs Jairam Ramesh compared Vajpayee’s time as an MP to the latest session of parliament where opposition demands to discuss the situation in India and China were not met. “Today is the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was a first-term deputy when he signed Nehru’s letter requesting that parliament be convened earlier than planned to discuss the Chinese invasion. Nehru agreed. Now MPs cannot even discuss the ongoing Chinese incursions,” Ramesh tweeted.
